Steps to use VA Benefits at Cal Poly

To ensure timely processing of your VA benefits, please follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
    Visit va.gov to apply for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE).

  2. Watch the Required VA Beneficiary Videos
    View the two mandatory instructional videos:

    • How to Use Your VA Benefits

    • How to Use the Veterans Benefit Module

  3. Upload Your COE into the Veterans Benefit Module
    Once you have your COE, upload it into the Veterans Benefit Module to begin the certification process.

  4. Request Certification for Post-100% Disability Rating Quarters
    Request certification for any quarters you have eligibility. Be sure to select only degree-applicable classes that contribute to your graduation progress. These will be processed and submitted to the VA.
    Please note: Payments for past terms may take a significant amount of time, so delays in receiving payment are to be expected.

  5. For Future Terms
    Request certification for your classes as soon as you complete your registration each term to ensure timely processing of your benefits.

 


Steps to Use the Cal Vet College Fee Waiver

To take advantage of the Cal Vet College Fee Waiver, please follow the steps below:

  1. Watch the Video Guide
    View the instructional video titled "Using the Cal Vet College Fee Waiver" to understand the full process and requirements.

  2. Apply for an Approval Code
    Contact your County Veterans Service Office (VSO) to apply for an approval code for the Cal Vet College Fee Waiver. Application is available here.

  3. Submit Your 16-Digit Code
    Once you receive your 16-digit approval code, submit it to us here our website. We will process your information and forward the approval to Student Accounts, who will apply the waiver to your state tuition costs for the current academic year.

  4. Future Applications
    To ensure the waiver is applied each year, please remember to apply for the approval code every Spring or early Summer. This will allow you to have your state tuition waived before your class costs are due.


Steps to Use Tuition Assistance (TA)

If you are a service member looking to use the Tuition Assistance program, please follow the steps below:

  1. Obtain Permission from Your Chain of Command
    Before utilizing Tuition Assistance, you must first obtain approval from your chain of command within your respective branch of service.

  2. Create an Account on Your Branch's Education Portal
    Set up an account through your branch’s education portal to manage and request Tuition Assistance.

  3. Complete the Form to Notify Cal Poly
    Once your account is active, visit this link and fill out the form to inform us of your intent to use Tuition Assistance for the upcoming term.
